Who we are
We are a group of women united by our shared experiences as alumnae of the Virginia Military Institute and members of the VMI community, and our shared values and mission:
Alpha Kappa Order seeks to serve as a moral compass for women of character through a lifetime of upholding the values of honor, discipline, morality, and selfless service.
We are guided by honor, lead lives instilled with discipline, endeavor to be unwavering and uncompromising in our moral values, and resolve to lead through selfless service within our communities, Nation, and the world.
Established in May 2024 by seven members of the VMI graduating Class of 2024, we intend to serve as a resource for our members and our communities, with the purpose of:

Annie Townsend '24
PRESIDENT + COFOUNDER
Annie grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, and served as the Band Company Commander during her First Class year, and on the Honor Court. A Civil Engineering major with minors in Spanish and Applied Mathematics, she is now pursuing a Master’s of Architecture at the University of Virginia. Annie hopes to apply her architecture and engineering training to service and community-oriented work after graduate school.

Michaela Speas '16
SECRETARY
Michaela earned her degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a Mathematics minor and was active in the Glee Club, Timber Framing team, and Club Volleyball. She served as an S-5 Lieutenant and as a Cadet Chaplain during her First Class year. Now living in Roanoke with her husband and two children, she works full-time in erosion and sediment control, stormwater plan review, and greenway and stream restoration projects. Michaela remains active in her church community and passionate about faith, family, and service.

Virginia Townsend '24
TREASURER + COFOUNDER
Virginia, from Lynchburg, Virginia, graduated with degrees in Chemistry and International Studies, along with a minor in National Security. She served on the Honor Court , and held leadership roles within the S2 staff, culminating as S2 Captain during her First Class year. She is also VMI’s first female valedictorian (Rah ‘24). Virginia is currently attending the University of Virginia School of Law. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in national security law.

Cassidy Dufour '23
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
Cassidy is a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and a third-year law student at the University of Virginia on an educational delay to enter the JAG Corps. She earned her B.A. in International Studies and Arabic with a minor in National Security and served as a Cadet Chaplain and Captain of the Rifle Team. Her interests include national security law, ethical leadership, and moral courage. Outside her studies, she enjoys reading and painting.

Whitney Matthews '07
DIRECTOR OF ALUMNAE RELATIONS
Whitney graduated with degrees in History and German from VMI, and went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America. She launched a successful food truck business, The SpiceSea Gourmet, earning multiple awards and national recognition on the Cooking Channel. Now based in Virginia, she co-founded Taste Supply, an e-commerce marketplace for specialty food producers. She serves as the company’s Chief Culinary Officer and Customer Relations Officer.

Grace Wagner '24
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS + COFOUNDER
Grace, from Abingdon, Virginia, served as an S4 Lieutenant during her First Class year and contributed to the S5 staff during her time at VMI. A four-year NCAA Women’s Soccer athlete, she also led the cadet tour guide program and served as ASCE Vice President. After graduation, she got her MBA at Emory & Henry while playing soccer with her younger sister, and is currently working as a Civil Engineer with a focus on environmental engineering.

Josie Lerner '23
DIRECTOR OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Josie, from Warrenton, Virginia, graduated with a double major in Psychology and Modern Languages and Cultures (Arabic). During her time at VMI she served as a Cadet Chaplain, library assistant, and member of the color staff. A Distinguished Graduate of AFROTC, she now serves as a Space Force officer and Crew Commander/Operator for the Upgraded Early Warning Radar at Beale AFB. Josie enjoys hiking, cooking, paddleboarding, and exploring new interests with her husband, Jason.

Rebekah Martin
RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE CHAIR
Dr. Rebekah Martin is a civil engineer and Assistant Professor at VMI with expertise in waterborne pathogens and building plumbing systems. She earned her Ph.D. from Virginia Tech and is an active member of multiple engineering organizations. Rebekah is a published researcher dedicated to engineering education and continuous professional development. She lives in Lexington, VA with her husband and three children.

Jocelyn Kolacz '22
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE CHAIR
Jocelyn, originally from Connecticut and North Carolina, graduated with a degree in History and a minor in English: Literary Studies. She served on S7 staff for three years, as a Cadet Chaplain, and as CIC of the VMI Powerlifting Club. She currently teaches high school history in Shenandoah County and is pursuing a master’s degree in History Education through Liberty University. Jocelyn also serves as Vice President of VetFuel, a nonprofit supporting veterans.

Christine Smith '16
MENTORSHIP COMMITTEE CHAIR
Christine graduated with a degree in English and commissioned into the Army National Guard as a Signal Officer. She served as a JNN Platoon Leader and Battalion S6 for both an Infantry and a Medical Battalion. Now a Network Administrator in South Carolina, she lives with her husband (VMI ’15) and their three children. A devoted Catholic, she is passionate about faith, prayer, and spiritual community.

Sarita Walters '21
PHILANTHROPY COMMITTEE CHAIR
Captain Sarita Walters graduated with a degree in International Studies and a minor in National Security, and commissioned into the Air Force after graduation. She is the Section Commander for the 341st Security Forces Squadron at Malmstrom AFB in Montana, leading a team of five in supporting 293 Airmen and the unit’s operational mission, and is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work at Liberty University. Her professional focus blends leadership, organizational support, and a commitment to serving Airmen and their families.

Alexandria Holt '24
OUTREACH COMMITTEE CHAIR + COFOUNDER
Alexandria grew up in Wellington, New Jersey, and served as an OGA Investigator during her First Class year. She was deeply involved in cadet activities, including Band Company, Ranger Challenge, the Pistol Team, and the VMI Boxing Team, where she competed nationally. An Arabic major, she studied abroad in Morocco and Jordan before commissioning as an Armor Officer. She is currently serving as an S4 officer for her Armor Battalion in Poland.

Tennille Barnabi '01
Tennille graduated in 2001 with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy and helped found the VMI Women’s Soccer Team, serving as one of its first captains. A member of Echo Company, she also served as Secretary of the Officer of the Guard Association during her First Class year. Since then, she has built a 24-year career with the Department of the Navy at Patuxent River, leading a logistics division that supports major DoD programs and warfighter readiness. Known for her proactive, process-driven leadership, she is passionate about mentorship, professional growth, and supporting future VMI leaders.

Brigitta Borinstein '19
Brigitta graduated from VMI in 2019 and is a wife and mom of two boys (ages 3 and 1) currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. She stays home full time while running a network marketing business in the wellness space and growing a ministry on the side that is dedicated to equipping women to be strong, purposeful mothers rooted in faith.

Madison Cappellano '24
Originally from Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, Madison graduated in 2024 and lives abroad—currently in South Korea and soon relocating to Guam. At VMI, she was deeply involved in cadet life, holding rank in the Corps, playing women’s soccer, and competing with Army ROTC before commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2024. She enjoys traveling with her husband, Connor Holland ’23, and prioritizes a balance between family and work.

Melissa Krawiec '01
Melissa is a board-certified Family Practice physician and Virginia native. She earned her B.S. in Biology from VMI in 2001, completed her medical degree at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005, and went on to complete internship and residency training in West Virginia and Maine. After several years practicing Family Medicine and Urgent Care in the Portland area, she joined the U.S. Department of State as a Regional Medical Officer, serving overseas in New Delhi and Warsaw. Following more than a decade of federal service, Dr. Krawiec returned to VMI in 2023 as the Institute Physician.

Meghan Pileggi '14
Meghan is a Marine Corps veteran, wife, and mother of five. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and has spent the past decade serving as a foster mom and community advocate in Eastern North Carolina and Northern Virginia. Meg is the founder and Head of School at Collective Leadership Academy in Kinston, NC—a faith-driven school created to meet the needs of her special-needs daughter and to empower students to rise above low societal expectations through character, courage, and conviction. She remains deeply committed to servant leadership, relational education, and community service.
